How Does The Literature Of This Country Communicate Its Values?

 

Day 1

Read Aloud:

 

 Cover Image  The Dancing Turtle, A Folktale from Brazil by Pleasant DeSpain & david Boston

 

When a hunter captures Turtle and takes her home for turtle stew, her only hope for escape is the hunter's children . . . and her own wit. Featuring watercolors radiant with foliage and wildlife, David Boston guides the reader through the dense and fertile Amazon rain forest in this folktale told throughout Latin America.

 

Activity:

  1. Create paper plate turtles.
  2. Write a summary about the story focusing on the moral of the story.
  3. Attach summaries to turtles and display.

 

 

 

Day 2

Relates the traditional Brazilian legend of how the Sea Serpent's gift of darkness to his daughter brings night to the people of the rain forest.

 

Activity:

  1. Compare and Contrast stories using a Venn Diagram
  2. Journal Writing ~ Creative Writing:  Think of another way that night came to the rainforest of Brazil.
